Life can be a continuous journey of loss experiences and there are many factors that influence how we respond. Unfortunately, there is no fast track option, the grief journey is a process and everyone responds to loss in their own unique way. For many of us there is a similar theme, although having said this, grief is so much more than an emotional reaction, and may involve changes in your social, psychological and cognitive functioning.
Generally speaking, grief resolves itself naturally, however sometimes grief may be complicated by other factors and it may take longer to resolve. In these instances, it is a good idea to seek grief and loss counselling.
Many people feel a deep sense of sadness and become quite tearful after losing someone, however there are other grief experiences that can manifest in a variety of ways, and a range of different emotions including denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and finally acceptance.
Many people experience emptiness, feel a deep sense of sadness and become disinterested in engaging with life. Some people experience appetite and sleep disturbances, some become tired and lethargic, whilst others may withdraw socially or have intrusive thoughts of death and suicide.
There is no right or wrong way to grieve. Everyone grieves differently.
